The story of Varjelus

Our everyday lives are full of rechargeable devices. Phones, headphones and smartwatches are everywhere – and are increasingly being charged at night or unattended. In line with this trend, the number of fires caused by electrical devices is also on the rise. News stories about battery fires are a constant reminder of how easily seemingly harmless charging can turn into a dangerous situation in an instant.

Most current charging protection products, such as charging bags, are cumbersome, impractical and often quite mundane looking objects. They just don't fit into the stylish home decor. We wanted to develop something that makes charging safe without compromising on appearance.

This is how Varjelus was born – a glass phone charging case that can withstand the heat of a smartphone battery fire and help prevent it from spreading.

How it all began

The story of Varjelus started with a simple question: why can't an everyday object that provides security also be beautiful? We wanted to combine fire safety and Nordic design in a way that feels natural for a home or a stylish workspace.

The first prototypes were made of heat-resistant molded glass and tested in practice. We burned phones, causing them to catch fire with their batteries, and saw how the product performed in the fire test. The end result was convincing – the product held up and the fire stayed inside the casing.

Our goal is to bring security to homes that works and looks good. We use our products every day to protect our own families and continue to develop the product through use and continuous feedback. That thinking gave us our first tagline "Varjelus – Just in Case."

Security that fits your home

In addition to safety, we wanted to make the product aesthetically pleasing. In designing the product, we aimed for a simple, streamlined, even monolithic form. Glass is a beautiful, light-permeable, and heat-resistant material, making it perfect for this product.

Varjelus looks good on a nightstand, a desk, or in the living room. Its clear and polished design makes it a part of the décor that doesn't need to be hidden away from guests. The highly heat-tolerant glass acts as a barrier against flames and hot gas, giving the user extra time to react if the phone battery should overheat for some reason. The product is entirely passive—it has no electronics or moving parts, only a carefully designed structure that effectively protects and isolates

Meaning of the name

The word varjelus means protection and care. It perfectly reflects the idea behind ​​the product – the desire to protect what is important to us. The name is simple, warm and approachable, just like the product itself.
